The Dark Before the Door Opens

On New Moons, new beginnings, and why I built this place

17 April 2026    New Moon in Aries    12:51pm IST

There is a particular kind of dark that happens just before something begins. Not ominous dark. Not threatening dark. The dark of a theatre just before the curtain moves. The dark of a kitchen at 5am when the bread is proving. The dark of a night sky at 12:51pm — well, alright, that one is not metaphorical — but you understand what I mean.

Today is the New Moon. And today, The Quirky Witch opens its doors.

I did not choose this date casually. I chose it because the New Moon is, in every tradition worth its salt (and witchcraft uses a GREAT deal of salt), the beginning of things. The moment of maximum potential. The blank page. The seed in the dark before it knows yet that it will become something.

And it seemed right, for a shop built on the idea that the universe listens when you know how to ask, to begin at the most listened-to moment in the lunar calendar.

What the New Moon actually is (and why witches care so much)

Let's be practical about this, because I find that magic works better when you understand why it works, rather than just performing gestures at the sky and hoping for the best.

"It doesn't stop being magic just because you know how it works." Terry Pratchett, The Wee Free Men

The New Moon occurs when the Moon sits between the Earth and the Sun — invisible to us, reflecting no light back. In astronomical terms, it is simply an absence. In energetic terms, it is something else entirely.

Think of the lunar cycle as a breath. The New Moon is the moment before the inhale — pure potential, uncommitted, open. The Full Moon, two weeks later, is the full exhale, the peak of energy, when everything is illuminated and nothing is hidden. Between them, the waxing and waning phases carry their own qualities: building, releasing, reflecting, renewing.

But the New Moon is where you plant things. Intentions. Projects. Decisions you have been sitting with too long. New habits. New chapters. New shops, apparently.

In spellcraft, timing matters. Setting an intention on a New Moon is not magic because of the Moon. It is magic because you have chosen a moment that carries meaning, carved out time that is specifically for this, and brought your full attention to what you want. The Moon is the reminder. The ritual is the focus. The magic is yours.

How to use New Moon energy in your spellwork

If you have one of The Quirky Witch spell kits, or if you are simply inclined to mark this moment for yourself, here is what I would suggest.

NEW MOON IS FOR CALLING IN, NOT PUSHING OUT

The New Moon's energy is magnetic, not propulsive. This is not the moment for releasing old grief or banishing difficult energies — that work belongs to the Waning Moon and the dark of the lunar cycle. The New Moon asks: what do you want to draw toward you? Love. Clarity. Opportunity. Courage. A sense of enough. Name it precisely. Vague intentions get vague results.

WRITE IT DOWN BEFORE YOU LIGHT ANYTHING

Before you begin any ritual tonight, take three minutes and write down your intention in plain language. Not poetic language. Not "I wish to be open to the possibility of" language. One clear sentence. "I am ready for a job that values what I bring."  "I am calling in a friendship that feels like coming home."  "I am beginning something (specify what) and I need the courage to see it through." That piece of paper is the foundation of everything else.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

I say this as someone who once owned a physical magic shop in the medieval centre of Genoa: the most powerful rituals are rarely the most complicated ones. A candle, an intention, a nice incense, your full and undivided attention for twenty minutes. That is enough. The universe is not impressed by elaborate staging. It responds to sincerity and strong will.

THE WINDOW IS LONGER THAN YOU THINK

You do not need to perform your New Moon ritual at exactly 12:51pm today — though if you happen to be free at 12:51pm today, by all means. The New Moon energy is generally considered strong for two to three days after the exact moment of the new moon. So if tonight feels right, use tonight. If tomorrow morning feels better, use tomorrow morning. Magic works with your life, not against it.

Why I built this place

I want to tell you something honest.

As I mentioned, years ago, I had a shop. A real one — physical walls, a window full of trinkets, shelves full of things that smelled of frankincense and myrrh. It was called O'Ratto Pennugo — The Bat — and it lived in the medieval lanes of Genoa, where the streets are so narrow that the buildings nearly touch above your head and the light comes in unexpected and sideways.

People came in for all kinds of reasons. Some came for the crystals. Some came because they had walked past three times and finally given in to curiosity. Some came because they were carrying old thoughts, a wish to learn more, and needed to feel that the universe was not entirely indifferent to them. They came with the childish glint in the eyes of someone who finds they weren't alone in their search.

That last kind — those were my people. And the thing I learned, over years of being with them, is that the ritual was never really about the candle. The candle was the permission slip. The moment they lit it, they had given themselves permission to want something, to say it out loud, to believe it was possible. The magic was the belief. The tools just helped get there.

"The universe listens when you know how to ask. I built this place to help you find the words."

The Quirky Witch is my attempt to bring that feeling somewhere it can reach more people. Not a high priestess situation — I want to be very clear about that. No hierarchy, no gatekeeping, no arcane knowledge required. Just a circle. A candle. And the shared, slightly stubborn conviction that asking matters.

This coven has no head of the table. It has a circle. You are already in it.

So. Here we are.

The New Moon is rising — or rather, not rising, technically, because it is not visible, but you know what I mean. The moment of potential. The dark before the door opens.

The shop is live. The spells are ready. The scrolls are written.

Whatever you are hoping for tonight — whether you light a candle or simply read this with a cup of tea and a quiet sense of Oh Yeah, this, — I hope you feel it: the particular electricity of something beginning.

The universe is listening. It always has been. Welcome to The Quirky Witch.

With magic,

Francesca
